Artist's Biography:

Adolphus Knell fl. 1860-1890.
From a well known family of highly regarded marine artists which includes William Adolphus Knell and William Calcott Knell. Initially he lived in Bath where he decorated furniture, a later address is listed in Bristol. He painted many port and marine scenes during the middle to late 19th century. He may be the son of William Adolphus Knell and a cousin to William Calcott Knell.

Many of his subjects seem to be moonlit, sunset or dawn, occasionally of fisherfolk on the shore at work. There are several works featuring Dover.
