Frank Hewett fl. 1900 - 1925
Francis Henry Hewett was born on in Leamington Warwickshire c.1854, his parents were Richard and Sarah and he had two brothers, John and Reginald and two sisters Eleanor and Fanny. In 1861 he lived at 268 Icknield Street, West Birmingham.  In 1871 he was employed as a draughtsman and by 1881 he was working as an engineer fitter and lived at 108 Alston Street, Birmingham.

Sometime around 1890 he married Annie Maria Hipkiss, who was four years his senior.  By 1901  he had moved to Rock Cottage, West Buckland, near Bantham in South Devon and employed a servant girl called Olive Welsman.

He painted many local seascapes and landscapes as well a charcoal portraits of local people. He formed and trained a local rifle volunteer group at the time of the First World War. He was an imposing man who would regularly be seen sketching on street corners.
Hewett provided an invaluable record of rural life and topography in West Buckland, Bantham and Thurlestone.  His watercolours display good draughtsmanship an unusual soft, tonal quality.

Frank died aged 77 at South Hams Cottage Hospital of appendicitis on 14th May 1932.  In his will, read in London, he left £2681. 14s. 10d to his wife Annie Maria and Ernest Boston. Annie lived to the age of 91 and died in 1941. ©Devonshire Fine Art 2013
