Artist Bibliography:
George Shaw 1843-1915
Painter in oil of moorland and coastal scenes, he was born on 8th February
1843, the son of a general trader and pawnbroker. The family moved to Worcester
and George worked as a pawnbroker, but later described himself as a dealer
in 'Rare China, Antiques and works of art'.
After a brief time in the USA he returned to England in 1890 and the following decade appears to have been his most active as an artist. George Shaw found a ready market for his work in Devon where he lived and exhibited regularly at Elands Art Gallery, Exeter and at W. F. Dyer's Gallery in Exmouth. In 1896, a large oil landscape of the Doone Valley was accepted by the Royal Academy, but not hung, and the Exmouth Chronicle reports that it was sold to 'a gentleman at South Kensington for 25 guineas'.
Many of his subjects were Dartmoor and Exmoor scenes, but he also painted coastal and sea studies. George Shaw. He lived at Exmouth, Torquay and finally Rewe, Devon where he died on the 2nd July 1915. He signed his work 'G. Shaw' in red and sometimes with a date.
