William Payne Original Watercolour

William Pay Origianl Watercolour

A tranquil river scene with distant bridge, extensive use of Payne's own pigment, Payne's Grey.
Clever use of colour on the ruin and tree draws the eye to the centre of the picture. An excellent example of Payne's work from the late 18th or early 19th century and in a much larger format than his more common sketch book studies.

Artist's Biography:
The inventor of Payne's grey, a colour still used today, was a prolific watercolourist. He had his devotees. It is all the more surprising then, that very little was known about him. He first started exhibiting at the Society of Artists of Great Britain in 1776 from an address in Park Street, Grosvenor Square.

In the 1780's at the Dockyard in Plymouth and from there sent most of his pictures, mostly Devon and Cornwall, to the Royal Academy and to the BI. By 1790 he had returned to London, where he became the most fashionable drawing master of the day. He last exhibited in 1830.
