Biography:William Snell Morrish (1844 - 1917)
Landscape watercolour artist from Chagford in Devon. The son of Sidney S. Morrish, he studied under his father and also at the Exeter School of Art and at Heatherley's. His son Bertram was also a prolific watercolour artist. The title of some his pictures exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists include: 1866 - On The Moor Near Chagford, Devon £15.15s. 1869 - Sharpitor Rocks near Chagford, £30. Autumn £12.12s. 1878 - Sandpits £ 6.6s. 1879 - Nr The Blauen see, Kandiesty, Swtz £15.15s. 1880 The Wildstrubel, Adelboden £6.6s. In The Gastern Thal £12.12s. 1880/1 - In The Lauterbrunnen Valley £12.12s. Exhibited: 4 @ RA, 8 @ RBA, 2 @ RI, 12 @ SS, 9 @ D.

'water-colour landscape, born at Chagford in March 1844; paints river and moorland subjects. He received some education at the Exeter School of Art, and at Heatherleigh's School in London, but his chief source of instruction was the work and conversation of the artists who in summer visited his picturesque neighbourhood. He paints with a bold, firm touch in the open air; his work is characterized by perfect fidelity and truthfulness and he is a admirable delineator of Dartmoor scenery.'
