This painting was exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy and includes a letter of thanks from the artist to the purchaser verso:
'16 Wellfield Place, Peel Street, Liverpool. 5th June 1900. Dear Sir, I beg to thank you for purchasing my picture, "a Devonshire Village", now in the Royal Academy. It may interest you to know that the scene depicted is the little hamlet of Batson near Salcombe, South Devon. Unless I hear from you to the contrary I will have the picture forwarded to your address at the end of the exhibition. I am, Sir yours faithfully, W. Pollen Bishop (To: H. C. Collyer Esq.)'

Walter Follen Bishop R.B.A. 1856-1936
Landscape artist who studied Liverpool School of Art and Julien's, Paris. Elected to the Royal Society of British Artists
in 1889. Lived in London, Liverpool, Caernarvonshire, Australia, South Africa and Jersey. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1893.
