William Payne, the inventor of Payne's grey, a colour still used today, was a prolific watercolourist.
He had his devotees. It is all the more surprising then, that very little was known about him. He first started exhibiting at the Society of Artists of Great Britain in 1776 from an address in Park Street, Grosvener Square. In the 1780's at the Dockyard in Plymouth and from there sent most of his pictures, mostly Devon and Cornwall, to the Royal Academy and to the BI.
By 1790 he had returned to London, where he became the most fashionable
drawing master of the day. He last exhibited in 1830.
